MINUTES OF CCMV MEETING
FEBRUARY 14, 2012

Jim opened the meeting by introducing new members.  A question arose regarding the issues between Verizon and MSN.  Jim showed the membership how to insure the profile contained at MSN included the telephone number in order to allow acceptance of credit card information.

Users desiring to activate the $9.99 per year MSN contract will have to
Access their profile via Internet Explorer (not MSN) at http://membercenter.msn.com, log in and select the Billing option and click on “Go to personal information.” If the phone number is not included in the personal information, click on the “Edit personal information” section and enter the phone number to enable activation via credit card.

Jim answered another question by describing how to change the homepage on your computer.  Jim did a review of the ccmv.net web site for new members.

We viewed 3 videos on Gorilla Glass by Corning. Video 1 - Video 2 - Video 3

The first video showed the “strength”, the second showed the “flexibility” and the third showed how Gorilla Glass resists “scratches”.  Jim showed another video on how Gorilla Glass is currently being used. Jim reminded everyone that when buying any item with a screen you should open the package and make sure that the screen in not broken or scratched.  After these videos, we saw a video on what may be available in the future.  .

http://www.sitejabber.com/ is a web site that is available to help computer users find “reliable” and “safe” sites.

Jim visited PC PitStop Windows Talk http://techtalk.pcpitstop.com/author/windowstalk/ to review computer maintenance.  He reminded everyone that “DeFrag” should not be performed more than a couple of times a year for the average home user.  He also reminded that before doing a DeFrag you need to do a ‘check disk’.

Jim opened up a Q&A session.  MSN Maps was reviewed.  Also the use of the “Snip Tool” was demonstrated as well as PIX Sizer and HTML Editor from the last meeting.

Jim closed the meeting by showing a “fun” video “Women in the changing Room”.  http://www.heaven666.org/embed/58709.

MINUTES OF CCMV MEETING
JANUARY 31, 2012

Jim Richardson opened the meeting by introducing 2 new members.  Jim then proceeded to do a review on “Cleanup”.  He explained that Cleanup would eliminate the “temporary files”, “Cookies” and junk files. Thus, speeding up your computer.  He also explained that although Malicious Software is often hidden in cookies and temporary files, Cleanup is NOT a Virus or Spyware removal tool.  Again, Jim reminded members not to open anything that “pops up” on your screen if it doesn’t say that it is “your” anti-virus program.  To close the program you must tap “Control F-4” or go to the “task manager”.  If you close the program any other way, you will install a virus on your computer.

Jim did a review of Microsoft Security Essentials.  Jim again showed how to get your  “signature” on your e-mail using the www.mylivesignature.com site.  Jim visited the CCMV web site to reviewed PixResizer and the NVU html editor – two additional programs addressed in a video shown at the last meeting.  Jim also explained how to download and “unzip” the files and install the software for PixResizer and NVU HTML editor.

Jim introduced another new member to the club.

Jim showed a video on Gigapixel Panorama Photography http://www.gigapixel.com.

Your Free Learning Source (Goodwill Community Foundation) http://www.gcflearnfree.org/  is an excellent website for learning “computer skills”.  Jim opened some of the video tutorials to show how extensive the site is.

Jim responded to a question regarding MSN and reminded everyone that Verizon FIOS has parted ways with MSN and if you want to keep MSN it will cost $9.95 per year.  He also mentioned that if MSN does not accept one’s credit card, it is likely due to a missing telephone number in your MSN billing information.  He showed how to go to http://membercenter.msn.com and insure the phone number was listed.

Jim closed the meeting by reminding everyone that February meetings will be on the 14th & 28th.

MINUTES OF CCMV MEETING
JANUARY 10, 2012

Jim started the meeting by apologizing for not explaining the importance of NOT CLICKING ANYWHERE on an unfamiliar window before checking the title bar to determine which program activated the window.  He also warned members about the new ransom ware virus attacking Windows 7, Vista and Windows XP.  Clicking anywhere on the open window, including the (X) close window button, will turn off your anti-virus software and install the ransom ware virus.  This virus is easily identified by the appearance of “antivirus 2012” in the title bar.  Jim stated that the safest thing to do when discovering this window is to hold down the ALT key and quickly tap the F4 key to close the window.  Then, run a Full Scan with your Anti-Virus program.

Should one panic by the ransom ware window’s notification of multiple viruses existing in your computer and click the remove button, a false scan is performed and the user is asked to spend money to have the viruses removed.  The user will usually close the window at that point by clicking the (X) close button.  From that point on, the original window will continue to appear. The user’s anti-virus program will have been disabled and the virus will be replicated to a deferent part of the hard drive each time the window is closed.  Jim stated that the user should restart the computer in safe mode (for XP log on in safe mode as administrator: For windows Vista and 7 select the repair option) and perform a system restore to a date at least two weeks prior to the infection and then update the antivirus software and run a full scan to remove the virus.

Jim then addressed the split between Version and MSN.  Jim stated the MSN could be replaced with Windows Live Essentials.  Jim showed the membership how to download Windows Live and activate their email account.

Jim spent the rest of the meeting showing the membership how to install a graphic in the signature of an email account.  Two how-to videos were shown and the free user software programs addressed in the videos were referenced.  The membership was advised that the web sites used in today’s presentation would be listed in the computer club's web site.

Time ran out and the meeting was adjourned.

Jim explained that a “defrag” should be done only once a year for the normal user and a heavy user can defrag twice a year.  Defraging a computer is very hard on the computer’s hard drive.  Therefore you need to limit the amount of times you defrag the computer.
