Improved Startup
Many programs
automatically
load when you start your computer,
even those that you don't need
or want. These programs unnecessarily
consume valuable active memory
and cause your computer to run
more slowly.
We highly recommend
that you modify your computer's
startup configuration so that only
the most important programs automatically
run (e.g., virus scanning and spyware).
Your ability to run desirable programs
won't be affected - they will launch
as usual.
Follow the steps below
to make the change for the Windows
XP operating system.
| |
Click on the START button
(lower left of screen) |
|
| |
Click on Run |
|
| |
Type
msconfig
in
the white space in the window
that opens
Then click OK |
|
| |
|
|
| |
You
will probably see the Normal Startup item
selected. Change that option
to Selective Startup by
clicking in the circle to its left as
shown here.
Now click on
the Startup tab
at the top right of the dialog
box, |
|
| |
|
|
| |
In the Startup tab you will see a list of all
the programs your computer can
launch. Checkmarks in the boxes
to the left of the programs
indicate which ones will automatically
load.
We recommend that you disable
all but those related to virus
or syware protection.
|
 |
| |
Once you have
disabled the programs, click
on the OK button
at the bottom of the dialog
box. |
 |
| |
You will be advised
that the computer must be restarted.
You may choose to do it now
or later. Click the Restart button
to immediately restart or Exit Without Restart if
you want the operation to occur
the next time the computer starts. |
 |
| |
When you restart,
you'll see this message reminding
you that a change to the configuration
was made. You will see this
message on each subsequent
start unless you check the
box
"Don't
show this message..."
We recommend that you check
the box. |
