Cleanup Your System

A CCMV YA OTTA...
Last Update - 2007-06-14

We highly recommend that you avail yourself of a valuable free tool from Stephen Gould:

CleanUp!

As described on its web site,

  • CleanUp! is a powerful and easy-to-use application that removes temporary files created while surfing the web, empties the Recycle Bin, deletes files from your temporary folders and more.
  • CleanUp! frees disk space and reduces the "clutter" on your computer helping it to run more efficiently. It also can be used as a way to protect your privacy on the Internet. You can even instruct CleanUp! to securely delete files making it impossible to retrieve their contents using lower-level disk tools - just another way of protecting your privacy.
  • No gimmicks here, CleanUp! is so easy to set up and use that you'll have a lean, clean, mean machine in minutes.

If you have the CCMV utilities disk:
Open the "Security and Utility Freeware" folder, and click on the file named "CleanUp452.exe"

If you want to download the program:

Go to the CleanUp! Download page and find the download button. It's the highlightedPrimary download site (setup program): CleanUp452.exe

When you "run" Cleanup452.exe, the program will install itself on your computer and launch itself. No icon will appear on your desktop, but you can add one later. This software is shareware. You may wish to send a contribution to the author to support program development.

When you initially run CleanUP!, you'll see this screen. We recommend that you configure the options to your liking.

Click on the Options... tab (the middle box on the right side of this screen). A

CleanUp! Options

dialog box shown below will appear.

Numerous options exist that specify how the cleanup will be done. Initially, we recommend you check the boxes shown to the right.

Note that this view is of the General tab (at the top). Several other tabs may be chosen to give additional options We recommend the default settings.

One exception to that general guidance deals with cookies. If you visit web sites that require a logon sequence (ID & password), you may want to preserve their related cookies. Click the Cookies tab to see the page below.

On this screen, list the names of sites whose cookies you want to be preserved, one name per line. The entire web address need not be included. For example:

google
yahoo
yourbank
yourothersites
ccmv

The name you list would generally be the portion of the web site name before the ".com" , ".net" or ".org".

Once you've entered your list, click OK to return to the opening screen. Your settings will be preserved and used in future cleanups. If you want to add sites in the future, just return to this screen.

On the main screen, click on the CleanUp! button The first time you use the program, you'll have the option of doing a trial run (i.e., no files are removed, but you'll get an idea of what would happen). If you're satisfied with the results, run it again and let it do its work!

Visit the CleanUp! site to learn more about its extensive capabilities and options.
